StudFinderPro is a downloadable software application and is designed to be used in detecting metals (including but not limited to screws, nails, bolts, or any other metal object). This is accomplished by way of detecting the magnetic fields that such objects give off.
It utilizes the iPhone's magnetometer readings and compares it to an internal calibrated baseline to determine whether it is experiencing magnetic interference, which would indicate the presence of a metal object that the magnetometer detects as a metal field.
It makes this determination by comparing the magnetometer reading to the baseline, making exception for readings that fall within a certain metal reading tolerance, and performs this comparison over all of the magnetometer's outputs to reach a decision as to whether the object is of metal origin.
StudFinderPRO will detect nails and screws, but it can also detect metal, electrical conduit and galvanized pipes beneath the surface, so a little creative cross-checking in different areas of the wall is prudent when using StudFinderPRO.
Check 16" and 24" to the sides of a given reading to see if another stud is indicated. If so, this confirms the idea that the first indication was actually a stud.
